Carolyn Schmidt Appointed to Sweet Adelines International Committee

The Sweet Adelines International (SAI) Board of Directors ratified the appointment of Gillette resident Carolyn Schmidt to serve as one of three coordinators of its International Music Arrangers Program (IMAP), for the 2013-14 term beginning May 1. The committee is comprised of three Master or Certified Music Arrangers. Schmidt was advanced to Master Music Arranger earlier this year, and is currently one of only five Master Music Arrangers currently active in the 23,000-member world-wide organization.

As an IMAP Coordinator, Schmidt will oversee the selection, evaluation, and promotion of music arrangers in the program. She previously served five years on the committee during the 90’s and has since served as a mentor to other arrangers in the program. Schmidt is a well-respected music arranger in Sweet Adelines International, having arranged over 125 songs, sung by hundreds of women’s choruses and quartets around the world.

Sweet Adelines International is a worldwide organization of women singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education, competition, and performance. This independent, non-profit music education association is one of the largest singing organizations for women.

Schmidt has directed the Basking Ridge, NJ-based Hickory Tree Chorus since 1990, and in 2000 advanced to the title of Master Director by leading the chorus to its first ‘600+’ score in Sweet Adelines International regional competition. Under her direction, the chorus has consistently placed 3^rd or higher in regional competition, and has qualified for International competition four times. The chorus was awarded 2^nd place in Sweet Adelines International’s 2012 Harmony Classic competition for mid-sized choruses. On April 13, it was awarded 3^rd place overall in the Greater New York Region’s annual competition.

HTC Accepting 2013 Scholarship Applications

The Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International is accepting applications for its annual $1,000 scholarship.  The scholarship will be awarded to a young woman graduate who intends to pursue a career in vocal music, based on vocal musical talent, YouTube presentation and application. The scholarship will be presented to the winner after her acceptance to a vocal music program at the college or university of her choice. Application deadline is April 19, 2013.

Hickory Tree Chorus Celebrates 45 Years of Harmony

The Hickory Tree Chorus celebrated its 45^th anniversary as a chapter of Sweet Adelines International with an refreshments and an open rehearsal February 20 in Basking Ridge.  The 50-voice women’s chorus was founded in the Hickory Tree section of Chatham in 1968 and has been entertaining local audiences, winning medals, and supporting vocal music education in the community ever since.

Friends and family enjoyed light refreshments and observed the open rehearsal as the chorus prepared to compete in the April 13 annual contest of the Greater New York Region of Sweet Adelines in Philadelphia.  The chorus has earned medals in every regional contest since 1977. They were awarded their first international medal in Houston, as Sweet Adelines International’s 2012 2^nd place mid-sized chorus.

Following rehearsal, members and guests celebrated with the induction of a new member, cheering a new chapter quartet, and socializing over cake and coffee.

Hickory Tree Chorus performs frequently in the community, including a performance at last year’s Charter Day. Its December 1 annual show ‘Jersey Bounces Back’ was a celebration of New Jersey’s resilient spirit in the wake of Super Storm Sandy.  Last July the chorus hosted Youth In Harmony Night for area student acappella groups, and it offers an annual $1,000 scholarship to an area high school senior girl continuing her vocal music education.

The chorus is one of more than 500 chapters of Sweet Adelines International committed to advancing the musical art-form of barbershop harmony through performance, competition, and education.  Members come from all walks of life, with a love of singing and performing fun-filled popular music forming a common bond.

"Jersey Bounces Back" With Audience Help

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International renamed “Jersey Bounce”, its December 1 annual show, “Jersey Bounces Back” and accepted donations for two relief organizations.

Despite a promotional schedule shortened by power-outages, displacement, and worse, the two shows at West Morris Mendham High School were nearly sold-out and audience members contributed over $1,000 to the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund and a mini-van full of non-perishable goods for the Community Food Bank of New Jersey.

Guests included Miss New Jersey 2012, Lindsey Petrosh, and Frank the Dog, a Barbershop Harmony Society quartet that donated its performance fee to the Hurricane New Jersey Relief Fund.

Prior to the show, chorus members donated children's winter clothing to the Somerset County Freeholders clothing drive.

HTC Renames Show "JERSEY BOUNCES BACK"

The Hickory Tree Chorus had been planning its big budget December 1 show for a year.  The 50-voice women’s a cappella chorus was awarded 2^nd place medals by Sweet Adelines International for its 15-minute New Jersey-themed show package at last year’s international mid-sized chorus contest, and knew it would translate well into a full-length show.

 

The show was named “Jersey Bounce” after the featured, swinging 1940’s up-tune. Members learned new, Jersey-themed songs arranged especially for the show by its Master Director and Master Music Arranger, Carolyn Schmidt – songs by Jersey girls Whitney Houston and Dionne Warwick, songs about Atlantic City and Cape May, and more.  The show would even feature special guest Miss New Jersey 2012, Lindsey Petrosh!

Then, Hurricane Sandy hit, knocking out power, damaging homes –and worse.  The chorus leadership struggled with whether or not it was the right time to go on with the celebratory New Jersey show, now made poignant by the destruction. Members were still without power. Some had damaged homes. One was making funeral arrangements.

But as communications improved, it became apparent that members longed to get back to the camaraderie of its weekly rehearsals in Basking Ridge, which had been canceled for two consecutive weeks.  They needed to be together to give and get support.  And they wanted to extend that sentiment to others.

The decision was made to go on with the show, re-name it “Jersey Bounces Back” and partner with the Community Food Bank and the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund, giving audience members the opportunity to contribute to the state’s recovery.

“Jersey Bounces Back” will be presented Saturday, December 1, two shows at 3:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., at West Morris Mendham High School, 65 Main Street, Mendham, NJ. In addition to Hickory Tree Chorus and Miss New Jersey 2012, guests include Frank the Dog (Barbershop Harmony Society’s 2013 Mid-Atlantic District Quartet Champion), and student a cappella groups from West Morris Mendham High School.

Carolyn Schmidt Masters Sweet Arrangements

Soon after joining Sweet Adelines International in 1974, Carolyn Schmidt, with no previous experience, was asked by fellow quartet members to ‘fix some chords’ in “I Write the Songs.” 

“Now I arrange the songs!” says Schmidt, who this month was advanced by Sweet Adelines International to the Master Music Arranger level, a level which few in the organization ever achieve.

In the 67-year history of the 23,000-member women’s barbershop singing organization, only eight Certified Music Arrangers have reached the Master Music Arranger level, and only 5 of them are currently active.  The Sweet Adelines International Board of Directors, its Education Direction Committee, and Arrangers Coordinators all must agree on the advancement of a Certified Music Arranger.

“Carolyn is so deserving of the Master Music Arranger advancement,” says Carol Schwartz, Director of Music Services, Sweet Adelines International. “The designation recognizes not just quality arrangements, but her service to the educational mission of Sweet Adelines International.  Carolyn has always been eager to help educate up-and-coming arrangers. She is a highly regarded mentor.”

Since advancing to the Certified Music Arranger level in 1990, Schmidt has served the organization as a coordinator for the International Music Arrangers Program, as Arrangers Seminar faculty, on a team identifying material suitable for Young Women in Harmony (YWIH) arrangements, as Co-Chair of the International Arrangers Seminar, and as an arrangers mentor.

Sweet Adelines International choruses and quartets sing popular music, a cappella style, arranged in four-part harmony.  The organization is committed to the advancement of the barbershop style of music, with its distinctive close harmonies, singable melodies, and lyrical messages.

Schmidt has arranged over 125 songs.  A random sample includes: “Come Fly With Me” the swinging uptune made popular by Frank Sinatra; “In My Life” the touching Beatles ballad; “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” the rollicking chick anthem made popular by Cyndi Lauper; and “Happy Together” the relentlessly chipper hit by the Turtles.

Her arrangements are performed by Sweet Adelines International choruses and quartets around the world, most often by Hickory Tree Chorus, the Basking Ridge-based chapter of which she is also the Master Director.

“My favorite arrangements tend to be the ones I’ve just completed, and right now I really love ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’, the song made popular by Whitney Houston, that I just finished for Hickory Tree Chorus’s December 1 show,” says Carolyn.

“It was a creative challenge for me and I really enjoyed listening to and learning from others’ treatment of similar songs. It’s taking something that might look static on paper and transforming it into something that becomes live and danceable when performed by a group of women, with no accompaniment.  It’s like spinning gold from straw.”

Schmidt feels fortunate that she has a talented chorus –Hickory Tree Chorus is Sweet Adelines International’s 2012 Harmony Classic 2^nd place mid-sized chorus –ready and able to bring her arrangements to life.

“Arranging can be kind of tedious, like a crossword puzzle, trying to fit the notes and chords together. You believe it’s going to work, but when you walk away from the piano it’s on paper, not living.” Schmidt’s voice quickens as she continues, “Then you give it to the chorus! And then it’s off the paper, and it’s alive! It’s like magic –POOF! You see the energy the chorus brings to it and to an audience. That’s what’s really exciting!”

Schmidt is a life-long resident of the Gillette section of Long Hill Township, where she lives with her husband and cats, and where she gardens and arranges magic.

The Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International awarded its 2012 Annual $1,000 Scholarship July 25 to Ariel Rubin, a 2012 graduate of Montclair High School, who will attend Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts this fall.

            Rubin has performed in musical theater from a young age, and appeared in eight musical productions at Montclair High School, including a starring role as Penelope Pennywise in this year’s production of “Urinetown.”  She is also a talented pianist, and has studied dance, acting, and musical theater at the ATC Studios in Clifton, NJ.

            After performing selections from “Jekyll and Hyde”, “Side Show”, and “Candide” for chorus members and guests, Rubin was presented the award by Hickory Tree Chorus Scholarship Chair, Lynn MacBeth

            Since 2001, the Basking Ridge-based Hickory Tree Chorus has awarded its annual scholarship to an area high school senior girl who intends to pursue a career in music. Recipients are chosen on the basis of their application and vocal music talent.  Applications for next year’s scholarship will be available January 2013.

Hickory Tree Chorus Installs 2012-13 Officers

            The Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International installed its 2012-13 Management Team ceremonies held June 11 at the Chimney Rock Inn in Gillette, NJ.  The Music and Performance Team was also recognized, and Hall of Fame and Choreography awards were also presented.

            Susan Williams of Madison was awarded the annual Hall of Fame award. A member of the chorus for 20 years, Williams currently serves as a Tenor Section Leader, a member of the Show Committee, and produces a weekly internal newsletter, but has held many leadership positions and “flies under the radar handling lots of vital tasks, never seeking recognition,” according to Master Director Carolyn Schmidt.

            Sara McHugh of Stanhope was awarded the “Golden Sneaker Award” for excellence in choreography. As a member of the choreography team, McHugh often presents the award to others members who have made great strides in choreography. But this year, the Management Team awarded the tongue-in-cheek trophy to McHugh, who returned to the chorus earlier this year after taking a leave of absence to pursue a Master’s degree.

Sing In Spring With Hickory Tree Chorus

The Basking Ridge-based Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International is buzzing with activity this spring, with two scheduled area performances and an invitation for women to join the chorus, join the fun!

About 20 members of the 50-voice chorus will perform 1:40 p.m., May 19 at Bernards Township’s annual Charter Day Street Fair and Festival. This will be the award-winning chorus’s first performance in Bernards Township, since the chorus moved to Basking Ridge in September 2011.

 “We’re really looking forward to performing for the community and meeting women who might enjoy singing chord-ringing, fun-filled, popular music with us,” says Master Director, Carolyn Schmidt.

Another small ensemble from the chorus will perform 1:15 p.m., May 25 at the Student Center at the County College of Morris. The performance is open to the public.

Hickory Tree Chorus Awarded Regional Medal

The Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International was awarded 3rd Place medals in the 2012 Greater New York Region annual competition, March 24 in Philadelphia, PA. It is the 27th regional medal awarded the Basking Ridge-based women’s chorus and the 14th under Master Director Carolyn Schmidt of Long Hill Township.

Individual members of the chorus also competed in the March 23 quartet competition, including Patricia Danner of Long Valley, who was awarded a 2nd Place medal with Drive! quartet. Members Rosemarie Gerber of Randolph, Lori Servidio of West Caldwell, Rita Peyton and Shayna Atkinson, both of Berkeley Heights, singing as Three Quarter Time quartet, were awarded the Novice Quartet Award.

Jeannie Allen of Florham Park, Eleanor Borris of Rockaway, and Lilas Schmidt of Long Hill Township were each awarded certificates recognizing their 40 years of continuous membership with the world-wide organization, singing exclusively with The Hickory Tree Chorus.

Each student should complete the application and submit a CD which should include at least two vocal performances, demonstrating her particular talent. Both the application and CD should be received by April 21, 2012. Please no DVD’s.

Basking Ridge Hosts Rehearsals Beginning Sept. 28

The chorus was founded 1968 in the Hickory Tree section of Chatham Township, from which it took its name. Basking Ridge is the latest rehearsal site change, and the chorus, which attracts members from more than 30 area communities, looks forward to meeting its new neighbors.

All Wednesday evening rehearsals are open, and guests are welcomed. The chorus hosts a free 'Friends and Familly' performance October 2, 4pm, featuring its 15-minute show package, which the chorus will take onto the Sweet Adelines International stage October 18 in Houston, TX. Guests are invited to hear the chorus then stay for refreshments.
