2012 Scholarship Applications Accepted Through April 21

The Basking Ridge, NJ-based Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International is pleased to offer its annual $1,000 Scholarship to an area high school senior who intends to pursue a career in music. This scholarship will be given to a young woman selected on the basis of her application and her vocal musical talent. Presentation of the check to the recipient is usually in June, after her acceptance to the college or university of her choice.

Each student should complete the application and submit a CD which should include at least two vocal performances, demonstrating her particular talent. Both the application and CD should be received by April 21, 2012. Please no DVD’s.

Basking Ridge Hosts Rehearsals Beginning Sept. 28

After many years in New Providence, Hickory Tree Chorus is moving rehearsals to St. Mark's Church, 140 S. Finley Road, Basking Ridge, NJ beginning Wednesday, September 28, 2011. Join the chorus, join the fun! Contact info@hickorytreechorus.org for full schedule and directions.

The chorus was founded 1968 in the Hickory Tree section of Chatham Township, from which it took its name. Basking Ridge is the latest rehearsal site change, and the chorus, which attracts members from more than 30 area communities, looks forward to meeting its new neighbors.

All Wednesday evening rehearsals are open, and guests are welcomed. The chorus hosts a free 'Friends and Familly' performance October 2, 4pm, featuring its 15-minute show package, which the chorus will take onto the Sweet Adelines International stage October 18 in Houston, TX. Guests are invited to hear the chorus then stay for refreshments.

Tess Oldfield Awarded HTC's 2011 Scholarship

The Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International, awarded its 2011 Scholarship to Tess Oldfield, recent graduate of Kittatinny Regional High School in Hampton, NJ. Oldfield, who intends to pursue a career in music, was selected on the basis of her excellent vocal talent, her accomplishments and her commitment to sharing her passion for music with young choristers. The scholarship is awarded annually to a young woman with exceptional vocal music talent living in one of the many communities represented by Hickory Tree Chorus members.

The public is invited to hear Oldfield perform during Hickory Tree Chorus's rehearsal 8:00 p.m., August 3 at 570 Central Avenue, New Providence, NJ.

Oldfield is a soprano who discovered her love of singing while performing with the Children's Chorus of Sussex County under the direction of Deborah Mello. At Kittatinny, she was a member of the Chamber Choir and the Madrigal Singers, performing musical roles such as Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music, Minnie Fay in Hello Dolly, Miss Dorothy in Thoroughly Modern Millie, Grace Farrell in Annie and most notably, Belle in Beauty and The Beast. She also enjoys singing popular music at her school's Open Mic Nights and Faculty Follies.

Oldfield believes in the power of music to change the world. “Music has been my safe haven and my way of expression in my life,” she states. “Music changed my world, and now I hope to change other people’s world by performing and teaching music.”

Oldfield has performed in the US, Canada, Italy, Brazil and Argentina in such venues as the National Cathedral, The White House, Saint Peter's Basilica, Saint Mark's Cathedral in Venice, and The Candelaria Cathedral in Rio De Janiero. This summer she will be touring the Netherlands, Belgium and France. The highlight of this trip is her performance at the Sint Stevenstoren in the city of Nijmegen, The Netherlands, where she was born.

In the fall, she will be attending Ithaca College with a dual major in Vocal Performance and Music Education.

The New Providence-based Hickory Tree Chorus is a champion chapter of Sweet Adelines International one of the world’s largest singing organizations for women, committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education, competition and performance. Kicking-off the season April 28th at Summit Downtown, Inc.'s 'Girls' Night Out' were HTC singers (l-r) Lyn Ertle, Laura Partynski, Betty Short, Jeanne Viscito and Carolyn Schmidt. The women greeted hundreds of shoppers in shops and businesses, singing popular songs in four-part, a cappella harmony. HTC Member Earns Director Certification from Sweet Adelines International

The Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International (SAI), proudly announces the successful completion of SAI’s Director Certification Program by member Jeanne Elmuccio of Plainfield. This educational program, one of many member-development programs sponsored by SAI, provides training and development for potential directors and musical leaders who wish to pursue and share their passion for women’s barbershop music.

To enhance and develop her skills in directing a Sweet Adelines chorus, Elmuccio followed a rigorous training and testing program that included teaching and management skills, analytical listening, vocal production, music theory and chorus performance. She currently serves as Assistant Director of the award-winning Hickory Tree Chorus, now preparing to compete on the international stage at Sweet Adelines International Harmony Classic competition in Houston, TX, in October.

Hickory Tree Chorus Master Director, Carolyn Schmidt of Gillette, praises Elmuccio saying, “Jeanne has become an integral part of our musical leadership. Her experience as a director in other musical genres combined with her sincere enthusiasm for encouraging and educating our members has made a huge impact on all of us. Participation in SAI's Director Certification Program gave Jeanne a chance to add specific knowledge to her natural talent, and I am happy to see her receive recognition for her achievement.”

Hickory Tree Chorus is one of more than 600 Sweet Adelines International choruses. Members of the Hickory Tree Chorus concluded a busy holiday singing season with a December 21 performance in the lobby of Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ. The women were invited to perform there after entertaining employees at the new Overlook Community Health location on Springfield Avenue while caroling throughout downtown Summit December 11.

The chorus, its quartets and small ensembles have spread holiday cheer this season by caroling in downtown Summit, Chester, Westfield and Perth Amboy and entertained audiences at Livingston Barnes & Noble, Boonton's Victoria Mews assisted living facility and the Greater Westfield area Soroptimist organization.

Wednesday rehearsals resume in January 2011, and the chorus invites women interested in singing fun-filled, chord-ringing popular music to join its annual "Sing A cappella Series" of free vocal lessons January 12, 19 & 26, 7:30pm, at 570 Central Ave., New Providence. Small Towns Ring with HTC Carolers!

Members of the Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International will be serenading shoppers and tree lighting ceremonies all over northern New Jersey this holiday season. Shoppers in historic Chester will be entertained by chapter quartets Moonstruck and Brocade, Sundays beginning November 28.

Shoppers in downtown Summit will spot a small ensemble caroling around retailers on Saturdays and Sundays beginning December 4.

Check the Hickory Tree Chorus website for other holiday performances, including tree lighting ceremonies in Berkeley Heights and Perth Amboy. Celebrate the season with a song!

HTC Member Celebrates 50 Years As Sweet Adeline

Some people will do anything for a bargain. Joyce Brandt of Stirling recently quipped that she was staying in Sweet Adelines International until she had fifty years of continuous membership so she could take advantage of the organization’s free Lifetime Membership awarded to members who reach that milestone.
“When I was about to reach 25 years, I briefly considered leaving Sweet Adelines,” says Joyce, “I mean, that’s a long time! But my son told me, ‘aw you have to stay and get your 25-year pin.’ I stayed and never looked back.”
Joyce was one of 18 women recognized for 50 years of membership on-stage October 21 at the 64th annual Sweet Adelines International convention in Seattle, Washington. Each received a commemorative pin, an engraved membership card, and lifetime membership in the women’s world-wide singing organization.
“Each year we recognize more and more members celebrating 50-plus years of membership,” says Carol Schwartz, Sweet Adelines International Director of Music Services.
Like Joyce, many of these women are still very active in the organization.
“Without Sweet Adelines International, I don’t know if I’d be as active as I am. Singing and performing is great exercise,” observes Joyce.
As a child, Joyce sang with her father in their church choir, but in high school chose playing drums over singing. When she graduated college in 1960, she joined a chorus in Union.
“My sister claimed I couldn’t sing, but I sang anyway. I competed in a quartet my first year. We placed 12th out of about 50 quartets. Not bad!” says Joyce.
That same year, she met Bob Brandt. They married a year later and will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary next August.
Joyce claims that one of the first arguments she and Bob had was over her involvement in Sweet Adelines.
“He thought I’d leave. I straightened him out right away and he’s been good to me since,” says Joyce.
Bob recalls the discussion a little differently.
“I specifically remember telling her that I did not want her to quit. I knew how important it was to her, but I did ask her to slow down, especially when we had children,” says Bob, adding, “I knew right away this was going to be part of our collective lives.”
Joyce and Bob have three children, Christopher, Jonathan and Jessica. Christopher and Bob are also active with Sweet Adelines, most notably with the backstage crew that keeps the annual competition of the Greater New York Region #15 humming.
“I’m very happy with what I do for the organization,” says Bob, adding, “and I don’t have to pay dues or wear make-up!”
Since 1974, Joyce has been singing and dancing with the New Providence-based Hickory Tree Chorus chapter, and will perform on the chorus’s annual show, November 20 at West Morris Mendham High School.
She has always been involved in the administration of the organization, both at the chapter and regional levels, including stints as Chapter President, Treasurer, Show Chair, Costume Chair, Regional Secretary, Regent, and Regional Competition Coordinator. Joyce is the current Chairman of the Regional Competition, overseeing the weekend events featuring chorus and quartet competitions which determine who represents the Region in International competition.
In her life outside of Sweet Adelines, Joyce is an Administrative Assistant at Central Presbyterian Church in Summit, and worked previously as a fifth grade teacher and at AT&T.
“What’s kept me with Sweet Adelines for 50 years? The organization is always growing, musically, administratively. I stay because I will never know all there is to know. I attend many Regional and International educational events and I always learn something.”

The award-winning chapter of Sweet Adelines International is auditioning women singers in all voice parts as it prepares for international competition in Houston, TX 2011. The chorus was one of 10 mid-sized choruses from around the world invited to compete in the Sweet Adelines International Harmony Classic contest for small and mid-sized choruses. The chorus emerged from world-wide regional competitions this spring as the highest-scoring of all the organization’s mid-sized choruses.

Singers do not need to know how to read music, but ideally will have had some performance experience -- in a school or community chorus, musical theater, or other a cappella ensemble. Randolph High School Graduate Receives 2010 Annual Scholarship

The Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International awarded its 2010 Annual Scholarship to Alessandra Altieri, a 2010 graduate of Randolph High School where she was a member of the Concert and Chamber Choirs for four years. She also peer taught the Treble Choir for one semester and conducted a piece with them in Randolph's Spring Choral Concert. She served as Vice President and Music Librarian of the Randolph High School Choir Council and President of the Drama Club. Alessandra participated each year in Randolph's spring musical; her favorite role was Maria in The Sound of Music, which she performed her sophomore year. She was also selected to participate for three and four years respectively in the New Jersey All-State and North Jersey Region Choirs.

At Randolph’s St. Matthew the Apostle Parish, Alessandra is an active member in the Teen Choir and acted as a Youth Assistant in the Children's Choir for the past two years. Last summer, she was accepted to and participated in the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp Vocal Soloist Studies Program. She spent four weeks in Interlochen, Michigan taking acting, diction, and music history classes from the highly-esteemed faculty. The program culminated in a recital of opera scenes, in which Alessandra sang the part of "Amahl" in Amahl and the Night Visitors. Most recently, Alessandra participated in the nationwide Classical Singer High School Competition. She placed 3rd in her regional auditions and continued on to the semifinals in New York City where she placed within the top 30.

Alessandra will attend Manhattan School of Music in the fall of 2010, pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Vocal Performance.

The New Providence-based Hickory Tree Chorus sings popular music year ‘round and is warming-up its holiday repertoire for this winter’s community performances, including its annual show, caroling in area downtown shopping districts and tree lighting ceremonies. Top Score Earns HTC International Invitation

The New Providence-based Hickory Tree Chorus has earned an invitation to compete in Sweet Adelines International’s Harmony Classic contest in Houston, October 2011. Invitations are limited to the five highest-scoring mid-sized choruses competing in the world-wide organization’s 28 Regional contests. Not only did Hickory Tree Chorus place first in the mid-sized chorus division (and second in overall competition) at the April 24 contest of the Greater New York Region but, with the final regional contest completed May 22, its score was also officially the highest of all mid-sized choruses in the world.

A frequent International competitor, this will be the first appearance by Hickory Tree Chorus in the Harmony Classic. Unlike the overall International competition, where semi-finalist choruses are limited to performing two songs, Harmony Classic competitors are considered finalists in their division so have the opportunity to perform a 10-15 minute “performance package,” a mini Broadway-style production with choreography and a story-line.

Master Director, Carolyn Schmidt of the Gillette section of Long Hill Township, is looking forward to continuing the chorus’s tradition of excellence. “I am extremely proud of our chorus! Our singers have grown so much as performers and will enjoy the challenge of preparing for a competition of this scope. Performing for the live convention audience and friends all over the world watching the webcast, will be very exciting.”

HTC Wins First Place Mid-Size Chorus, Second Place Overall

The Hickory Tree Chorus was awarded First Place Mid-Size Chorus and Second Place Overall in the annual competition of the Greater New York Region of Sweet Adelines International, April 24, 2010 at the Sheraton City Center, Philadelphia, PA.

In quartet competition, Hickory Tree Chorus members appeared in three of the five medalists quartets. Escape, featuring HTC member Susan Schuman singing lead, was named 2010 Champion Quartet. Drive! featuring HTC member Patty Danner singing baritone, was awarded Third Place. The Four Baris, featuring HTC members Dana Dunlevy (tenor), Laura Partynski (lead), Kat Britt (baritone) and Carolyn Schmidt (lead), was awarded Fourth Place and the Novice Quartet Award.

Free Performance for Friends and Family of Hickory Tree Chorus

Friends and family of the Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International are invited to a free performance Wednesday, April 14, 8:15 p.m., 570 Central Avenue, New Providence. Chorus members will kick up their heels in preparation for the chorus’s participation in the annual contest of the Greater New York Region of Sweet Adelines International.
“We often welcome visitors to our weekly rehearsals, but there’s nothing like the excitement of performing for our friends and family who usually only hear us singing one of four parts around the house! The 50-member chorus sings a cappella music in four-part harmony, barbershop style, and it’s just not the same without the other three parts ringing a chord!”, says Dana Dunlevy, Marketing Chair.
Doors open for guests at 8 p.m. The chorus’s half-hour set features fun, popular uptunes and moving ballads enhanced with choreography. Guests have the opportunity to meet and greet chorus members following the performance and before the chorus resumes its regular rehearsal at 9 p.m.
The Greater New York Region of Sweet Adelines International hosts its annual quartet and chorus contest April 23-25 at the Sheraton City Center, Philadelphia, PA. “April Showers Bring . . . Singing In the Rain” features more than 700 area women, members of the Region’s 15 choruses located throughout lower New York state, Long Island and New Jersey. Hickory Tree Chorus is proud that four of 14 competing quartets will feature its members.
In its 41 year history the chorus has won 25 Regional medals, 12 under current Director Carolyn Schmidt of Gillette, and competed on the International level seven times. Members hail from 40 area communities and all walks of life –real women, singing real harmony, and having real fun. Hickory Tree Chorus Accepting Scholarship Applications

The Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International, is pleased to offer its annual $1,000 Scholarship to a young woman graduating high school in 2010, who intends to pursue a career in music. This scholarship will be given to a student selected on the basis of her application and her vocal musical talent.

Completed applications should include a CD or audio-tape, which should include at least two vocal performances, demonstrating the applicant’s particular talent. Applications must be received by April 16, 2010. All applicants will be notified during the week of May 24, 2010.

Hickory Tree Chorus Spreads Holiday Cheer!

Carols rang throughout northern and central New Jersey as the Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International, its ensembles and quartets spread holiday cheer with a full holiday performance schedule, even with two performances cancelled due to snow.

Escape, Moonstruck, True Blues and Brocade quartets regularly carolled on the streets of downtowns in Westfield, Chester and Summit. Small ensembles performed at the Berkeley Heights Tree Lighting, for the International Association of Administrative Professionals, and a 90th birthday party.

The final performance of the 2009 season featured the full chorus, performing two 45-minute sets, at the Assumption Church in Morristown as part of First Night Morris, one of the state's largest First Night celebrations.

The chorus looks forward to another full performance schedule in 2010, beginning with its popular Singing Valentines program. Sweet Adelines International’s Hickory Tree Chorus invites women singers in the north/central New Jersey area who want to improve their vocal skills to register for the chorus’s Sing A Cappella Series, 7:15 pm January 6, 13, 19, and 27 at 570 Central Avenue, New Providence, NJ. The Hickory Tree Chorus is one of the hundreds of Sweet Adelines International choruses that make up this worldwide organization of women who sing four-part barbershop harmony.

Any woman of average singing ability, with or without vocal training, will find a part that fits her voice range with the help of Hickory Tree Chorus’s Music and Performance (MAP) team. Sing A Cappella participants will have the opportunity to work with Renee Porzel, Sweet Adelines International Certified Faculty, who will coach the chorus in Performance and Expression January 19. Members of the Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International perform and speak to women interested in membership 1:30-2:30 pm, October 7 and 14 at the New Providence Farmer's Market.On those same evenings, as well as October 21, at 7:30 pm the chorus hosts "seat-to-stage!" free classes for women interested in learning a fun-filled song to perform on-stage with the chorus on its annual November 21 show.

seat-to-stage! is an opportunity for women to get out of the audience and onto the stage as a performer with the award-winning Hickory Tree Chorus on their November 21 original show, Museum Mayhem. HickoryTree Chorus Honors 'Woman of Note'

Jeannette “Jeannie” Allen was named the year’s ‘Woman of Note’ by the Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International in ceremonies held September 12 at the Sheraton Parsippany during the annual education weekend of the Greater New York Region of Sweet Adelines International. Each of the fifteen regional chapters honored a member who has inspired others by their contributions to the organization.

Allen has been a member of the New Providence-based Hickory Tree Chorus chapter since 1971. She has held the offices of Chapter President, Treasurer (for several terms) and Secretary and has also served on most chapter committees at one time or another, most notably as Business Manager for the Show Committee and currently as Chair of the Costume Committee. She is a former bass Section Leader and a current member of the Music Team.

Allen also serves the fifteen chapters of the Greater New York Region as Regional Management Team Finance Coordinator. She served three terms as the Regional Convention Committee’s Assistant Competition Coordinator and the last three years as Competition Coordinator, a position appointed annually by the Sweet Adelines International Board of Directors. In that capacity she coordinates the Region’s annual chorus and quartet competition and convention.

In her hometown of Florham Park, Jeannie is both Cantor and Lector at Holy Family Parish where she also sings soprano in the parish choir. She was a Girl Scout leader, softball coach and has worked on the Election Board. She and her husband, Ken, are cancer survivors and annually participate in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life programs.

She works as an Office Manager, a job she accepted when her employer agreed to allow her time for her Sweet Adelines commitments.

Female barbershop singers converge in Parsippany

PARSIPPANY — They took to the stage Sunday in the Parsippany Sheraton and belted out barbershop quartet-style singing. At times, they formed a kick line.

And not one of the performers was male.

These barbershoppers were members of area chapters of Sweet Adelines International, a worldwide organization of women singers dedicated to advancing the art of barbershop harmony singing.

Roughly 15 chorus chapters in the New York/New Jersey area, or Region 15, met at the hotel starting Friday for a weekend promoted with the slogan, "Real women. Real harmony. Real sound." About 200 people attended.

Women of all ages, many from Morris County, met to share stories, pass along tips and, most important, learn how to improve not just their singing, but performing chops.

"I love to sing. I sang all the way through school," Betty Clipman of Houston said before leading a workshop with the New Providence-based Hickory Tree Chorus.

She became a homemaker and "just missed the singing and the camaraderie of other women," she said. So she joined a local chapter of the Sweet Adelines and rose up the ranks to become an international board member. She flew in from Texas specifically to teach women how to improve their vocal and physical performances to better connect with audiences.

Lilas Schmidt and her daughter Carolyn Schmidt, both of Long Valley, and Carolyn's daughter Andrea Kahn, 23, of Brooklyn represented three generations of singing at Sunday's breakfast and workshop.

"I think it's really a great way for all of us to bond and a great creative outlet to relieve whatever stresses are going on in our lives," said Kahn, a Morris County native.

One of the Hickory Tree Chorus' newest members, Tina Petersen of Chatham Township, said joining has helped her battle against Lyme disease.

"I find the joy of singing with these women is wonderful medicine," she said. "It makes you feel good."

The local chapters compete against members within their region, and from there the winner goes on to an international competition. Scott Brannon, director of the Ridgewood-based Harmony Celebration Chorus, said his group won the regional contest and next year will compete in Seattle.

He said with the exception of the directors, all the singers are female.

Dana Dunlevy, a Hickory Tree Chorus member, said women who would like to join simply need to look up a chapter and attend a practice.

"They don't need formal musical training," said Dunlevy, of Florham Park. "If they can sing reasonably well, we can work with them."

Dunlevy said becoming proficient doesn't need to be an overnight process. She said sometimes it takes singers weeks to feel comfortable.

"We want them to be successful," Dunlevy said. "We want them to join."

Hickory Tree Chorus Awards Scholarship

Virginia Hixson of Bridgewater has been awarded the 2009 Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International Annual Scholarship. The chorus awards the $1,000 scholarship to an area high school senior girl with a good academic record and exceptional talent in vocal music who has applied for acceptance into a music program at a college or university.

Hixson is a June 2009 graduate of the Bridgewater-Raritan High School where she was a member of the Choir. She served as the Alto II section leader and was also accepted into the Chamber Choir where she sang alto II, and served as tenor section leader.

“I was the only ‘tenalto’ in my chamber choir,” says Virginia.

She also studied Music Theory and, as a senior, gave sight-singing lessons to freshmen and sophomore choir students. She is the youngest member of her church choir where she sings with her father, Dana Hixson. Virginia is currently the youngest member of the Hickory Tree Chorus, singing baritone. She performs regularly with the chorus and participated in both Regional and International competitions since joining the chorus in May 2007.

Hixson will attend The College of New Jersey in Ewing, NJ where she will major in mathematics and minor in music. Virginia has, since eighth grade, dreamed of becoming a mathematics teacher and now also dreams of becoming a Sweet Adelines International chorus director.

FLORHAM PARK - The Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International is looking out for new members, said Dana Dunlevy, a Florham Park resident and member of the group.

“We are accepting registrations for our free ‘Sing A Cappella Series’,” said Dunlevy.

The summer session of vocal workshops will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from June 24 through July 8, at the New Jersey Youth Symphony Music Center, 570 Central Ave. in New Providence.

“Women will learn to sing chord-ringing, fun-filled, four-part, a cappella music in the barbershop style with a small group of other guests,” said Dunlevy.

A trained member of Hickory Tree Chorus’s music staff guides the group, she said.

“The sessions include a free voice-placement evaluation,” Dunlevy added.

The winter Sing Acappella Series has been wildly popular, she said, attracting more than a dozen guests, “six of whom joined the Hickory Tree Chorus and have already enjoyed singing in community performances.”

‘Joy To My Heart’

Tina Peterson of Chatham, a winter Sing A Cappella Series participant who joined the chorus in February, said of her experience, “I always loved to sing and found I was really sad when I was no longer singing with my girls at their ‘Mommy and Me’ music classes. I saw a flyer for Hickory Tree’s free Sing A Cappella Series and decided to come. I feel so lucky to have joined this award-winning chorus,” Peterson said. “Singing with the Hickory Tree Chorus has brought joy to my heart on a weekly basis. The fellowship of this warm, talented group of women is a real treasure on my ‘mom’s night out’.”

The Hickory Tree Chorus was awarded the bronze medal in the Sweet Adelines International’s Greater New York Regional chorus contest on March 28, in Philadelphia, Pa.

It was the 25th regional medal awarded the chorus, and the 12th under Master Director Carolyn Schmidt.

The singing group achieved the highest-ever score, performing the ballad “If You Love Me” and the up-tune “Lulu’s Back In Town.”

Making their stage debut in March were four new chorus members, graduates of the Hickory Tree Chorus’ January Sing A Cappella series of workshops. The women qualified to compete after dedicating eight weeks to perfecting notes, artistry, and choreography.

Membership Offer

Women who attend the first Sing A Cappella Series session on Wednesday, June 24, will receive a free first-month membership should they join the chorus by Wednesday, Sept. 30.

The chorus, which is nonprofit, was chartered in 1968.

It is an award-winning women’s chorus singing four-part a cappella harmony in barbershop style. The chorus is a chapter of Sweet Adelines International.

The 70-plus members hail from more than 40 communities in New Jersey, from Wantage Township to the Toms River section of Dover Township and from Hackettstown to Staten Island, N.Y.

The women are dedicated, making the trip to New Providence each week for the chance to sing popular music, ballads, and novelty tunes in close harmony, improving their musical skills and performing throughout northern New Jersey.

Berkeley Heights Honors Veterans In Annual Memorial Day Celebration

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - On Memorial Day, Berkeley Heights Township paid tribute to America’s veterans by holding its annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony.

The parade began at 9:30 a.m. from the Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad situated off of Snyder Avenue. Sections of Springfield, Snyder and Plainfield Avenue were closed to clear a roadway for the parade.

The parade procession continued through downtown Berkeley Heights and stopped at Memorial Park, where crowds of Berkeley Heights residents waited to receive the paraders. A special motif of this year’s parade was the Berkeley Heights’ Bicentennial. New segments of the parade reflected the same town pride that the series of bicentennial flags in downtown Berkeley Heights help to convey.

ReMax Realtors contributed a new float in honor of the town’s two hundredth birthday. In addition, the Third New Jersey Regiment Revolutionary War Reenactment Group click-clacked down the avenues with buckled shoes and saluted townspeople with rifles in hand. The entire procession was led by the Grand Marshal Car in honor of this year’s selected Grand Marshal.

Adhering to Berkeley Heights tradition, the Town Council selected World War II veteran and current Berkeley Heights resident Mr. Richard Hodshon as the 2009 Grand Marshal. The Grand Marshal Car was flanked by Berkeley Heights Town Council members and Mayor David Cohen.

The Berkeley Heights Police and Fire Departments rolled by with a fanfare of honks and sirens. Following the Berkeley Heights Senior Citizens Bus, the Governor Livingston High School Highlander Marching Band blared its trademark bagpipes. Color guards twirled bulls-eye patterned flags in rhythm with the band’s percussion section. Packs of vested girls and boys from Cub Scout, Brownies and Daisy Troops walked alongside parents, each flourishing an American flag. Girl and Boy Scout troop members clenched bags from which they fished out candy to throw to bystanders. A convoy of vintage cars and the Township Road Department Vehicles brought up the rear of the parade.

Events continued in Memorial Park, where Mayor Cohen greeted town residents. "It seems every year we get a better Memorial Day," remarked Cohen, "This parade would not have been possible without our Recreation Committee."

The Memorial Day ceremony commenced with the induction of 2009 Grand Marshal Richard Hodshon. Hodshon is a Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander, volunteer department serviceman and a member of the Berkeley Heights Senior Club. Fellow veteran Frank Perlzak characterized Hodshon as an active man. "He seems to have endless energy and is most happy when serving others," Perlzak avowed.

Seventh grader Kira Prabhu recited her essay, "Why American Veterans Should Be Honored" in tribute to the nation’s soldiers. Her essay won third place nationally in the Patriot’s Pen essay contest, earning her an invitation to the VFW convention in June. Prabhu emphasized national respect and gratitude toward the nation’s veterans. She concluded firmly in her essay, "American veterans should and will be honored."

The musical segment of the ceremony included a patriotic medley, "This is My Country," sung by members of the Hickory Tree Chorus. The Highlander Band played "Amazing Grace" as the township set aside a moment in honor of deceased members of VFW Post 6259. Eighth grader Bridget Crisonino sang "America the Beautiful" and the ceremony drew to a close with "Veterans of the USA," a salute sung by Dennis and Christina Ryan.

The annual Berkeley Heights Memorial Day Ceremony formally ended with a benediction by Union Village United Methodist Church Pastor, Reverend Grace Pak. The celebration, however, then resumed with complementary refreshments and hot dogs in Memorial Field.

The Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International (SAI) was awarded the bronze medal in SAI’s Greater New York Regional contest March 28, 2009 in Philadelphia, PA. It is the 25th Regional medal awarded the New Providence-based chorus of 54 women singers.

Under the guidance of Master Director Carolyn Schmidt of Gillette, the Hickory Tree Chorus achieved its highest-ever score, performing the ballad “If You Love Me” and the up-tune “Lulu’s Back In Town,” sung in four-part, a cappella harmony in the barbershop style, with choreography.

The chorus performs often in the area, including in its annual show, at community events and at private functions. Interested women singers are invited to attend a Wednesday evening rehearsal at 570 Central Avenue in New Providence. In February, the chorus welcomed five new members who were able to participate in the competition with the educational support of the chorus, which provided coaching to all members by an international champion SAI director.

Hickory Tree Chorus supports vocal music education in the community in many ways, including the offering of its annual $1,000 scholarship to a talented high school senior girl continuing her vocal music education. This year’s scholarship deadline is April 24.

Schmidt and Assistant Director Patricia Danner are also involved with the upcoming Festival of Harmony, a full-day a cappella workshop for young men and women held April 18 in Rahway (festivalofharmony.org).

CHAMPION DIRECTOR COACHES HICKORY TREE CHORUS

World-renown chorus coach Jim Arns trained members of the New Providence-based Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International (SAI) March 8 as the chorus prepares for the annual SAI Greater New York Region competition March 28 in Philadelphia, PA. The winning chorus will compete with other SAI regional champion choruses from around the world 2010 in Seattle, WA.

Arns is the Master Director of the Melodeers Chorus , the 2009 International Sweet Adelines Champion. It was the fifth International championship under Arns's direction, and it was won with a record score. In addition to his international reputation as director, arranger, clinician and coach, Arns serves as faculty at regional, national, and international SAI educational symposiums. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree at Benedictine University and a Masters of Music Degree at Northwestern University.

Hickory Tree Chorus Master Director, Carolyn Schmidt, enjoys a good relationship with Arns.

"I like to bring Jim in close to competition because he knows just what the chorus is capable of accomplishing and gets us there. He is well-respected and well-liked by both the chorus and me" says Schmidt.

She jokingly refers to Arns's Northbrook, IL-based Melodeers Chorus as "Hickory Tree West" as a few Melodeers Chorus members are former Hickory Tree Chorus members, including Schmidt's daughter, a member of the chorus while attending Northwestern University.

Sweet Adelines International and its chapters are committed to education on many levels. The organization offers Director and Arranger training and certification, leadership training, and a Young Women In Harmony program offering music educators the means of including the study and performance of barbershop harmony in school music programs. In addition to regular vocal and showmanship coaching, Hickory Tree Chorus offers members private voice instruction and, an annual scholarship to a young woman graduating an area high school with plans to pursue her vocal music education.

MADISON - An ensemble from the Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International delivered a package of holiday tunes and other songs Thursday, Dec. 18, to the residents of Madison’s senior citizen housing located at 15 Chateau Thierry Ave.

In return the chorus received one of the warmest receptions it has experienced this holiday season.

Loretta Carey, a resident of the complex, contacted the champion chorus last summer. She was dismayed to learn that in order to cover chorus expenses, like rehearsal space, the chorus charges a fee for its performances.

“I have no budget. Maybe you could rehearse here,” she offered, adding, “The residents would so appreciate anything you could do.”

At the time, the chorus was busy preparing for its annual show in September and a Sweet Adelines International competition in November, but was touched by Carey’s plea - and decided to donate a holiday performance.

The 60-voice chorus would have overwhelmed the space, so a 10-member ensemble was sent.

Enthusiastic Reception

The residents, some dressed in holiday sweaters or wearing holiday pins, lined up for seating outside the performance room half an hour before the singers were scheduled to begin.

They smiled, cheered and sang-along to holiday favorites like “White Christmas” and “Jingle Bells,” and were game for some new tunes, like “Funky Rudolph.”

“Although some of our quartets are still caroling in area downtowns, this was the last of eight holiday performances for the chorus, and we could not have asked for a more enthusiastic and appreciative audience,” said Hickory Tree Chorus Master Director Carolyn Schmidt.

The residents surprised each singer with a small gift following the performance.

Carey was near tears in thanking the singers as they departed.

“It is difficult for some of our residents to get out,” Carey noted. “It is such a treat to have performers like this come here.”

“SING A CAPPELLA SERIES” INVITES WOMEN SINGERS

Women singers are invited to attend any or all sessions of a unique month-long series of free workshops sponsored by the Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International. “Sing A Cappella Series” will introduce singers to the barbershop-style of a cappella music under the guidance of Patricia Danner (pictured on left), a New Jersey state-certified music educator, and Carolyn Schmidt (on right), Master Director of Hickory Tree Chorus.

Danner, of Long Valley, is a music educator at West Morris Mendham High School, where she teaches a variety of musical genres, including barbershop singing. Several of her students sing in barbershop quartets and one quartet performed on a Hickory Tree Chorus show. She is an Assistant Director with Hickory Tree Chorus.

“Sing A Cappella Series” guests will work exclusively with Danner to hone their vocal and listening skills. The workshop will be held concurrent with Hickory Tree Chorus’s weekly rehearsals and guests will be invited to attend any part of the regular rehearsal following their private workshop.

“In this small group setting singers will be able to learn and experience barbershop-style singing in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere. The shared experience may even create some lasting friendships,” says Danner.

Schmidt of Gillette, has served as Master Director of Hickory Tree Chorus for the past 15 seasons. Under her directorship, the chorus has won many awards and competed in international contests, most recently November 6 in Honolulu, Hawaii. She is also one of 25 Certified Music Arrangers in the Sweet Adelines International organization.

“Patty is an especially talented and fun young woman who infects everyone with the joy of singing well. I know our guests will benefit from, and thoroughly enjoy, their time together with her,” says Schmidt.

“When I came to the chorus as a singer, I found the four-part a cappella harmonies captivating and members warm and welcoming, enough so that I've remained a member of the organization for the past 34 years,” says Schmidt, adding, “As director, it is my passion to share my knowledge and love for performance with other women singers.”
Schmidt encourages interested women singers to seize this unique opportunity. “My mom joined when she was in her mid-forties and, at 82, she is still going strong as an unbelievably vibrant singer and performer. She has often stated that she wished she found the chorus years earlier. While most of our members are significantly younger than Mom, she is living proof that healthy singing and a healthy attitude can go a long way!”

LONG HILL TWP. – Lilas Schmidt of Gillette, a member of the Hickory Tree Chorus, was honored by the Greater New York Region of Sweet Adelines International as a Woman of Note at its annual education weekend held Sept. 12 to 14 at the Ramada Inn and Conference Center, East Hanover.

She will be singing with the Hickory Tree Chorus for its 40th anniversary show at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at Chatham High School, 255 Lafayette Ave., Chatham.

Fifteen women, one from each chapter in the region of 700 members, were recognized.

Schmidt joined the Hickory Tree Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International in the spring of 1971 and became costume chairwoman for the fall show that same year.

Soon after, she was named chapter president, a position she has held twice in her 37 years of membership.

During those years, she has served also as show chairwoman three times, show coordinator three times, chapter secretary, engagements and/or ways and means chairwoman and a member of the costume committee for most of her chorus life.

“The next time I join an organization, I’m not going to carry anything except my purse,” she said as she arrives at a recent rehearsal, arms full of costumes ready for fitting in time for the 40th anniversary show, “The Best of Times.”

With all the costumes she has designed and sewn for her many quartets — she has competed in a record 37 consecutive regional Sweet Adelines International quartet contests – and literally hundreds she has sewn for Hickory Tree Chorus, it is hard to believe she has had time to sing.

But sing, and teach, she has, serving as bass section leader for 30 years.

“Why join anything if you’re just going to sit on the sideline?” Schmidt said, adding that she has never done anything for the glory, but rather because she has wanted the chorus to be successful.

And the chorus has been successful, having been awarded seven first place regional championships in its 40-year history, the most recent in 2007.

That win qualifies the chorus to compete Wednesday, Nov. 5, in the Sweet Adelines International contest in Honolulu, Hawaii, under Master Director Carolyn Schmidt, Lilas’ daughter.

Hickory Tree Chorus Makes Beautiful Music

The Hickory Tree Chorus, a champion chapter of Sweet Adelines International, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. The group, which sings four-part a cappella harmony in barbershop style, is credited with keeping older women young at heart and helping younger women mature and grow older gracefully.

"Our 60 active members are real-life women who are teachers, lawyers, nurses, mathematicians, scientists, homemakers, students and entrepreneurs who love to sing," said Dana Dunlevy of Florham Park, publicity and marketing chair.

Patti Smith of Chatham told how singing with the group enhances her life.

"Both my mother and aunt sang barbershop," she said, "so that kind of paved the way for me to join this group in 1992. I am a nurse; not everything I see is pleasant, but when I am here singing, my whole spirit lifts.

"The chorus is supportive of each other, emotionally, spiritually and financially. It is very much like a sisterhood."

The chorus has its roots in the Hickory Tree section of Chatham Township. While the location of rehearsals has changed frequently over the years, the group retained the name. Currently it practices in New Providence.

Sweet Adelines International is a worldwide, independent, nonprofit music education association whose motto is to "Harmonize the World." It is committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performances.

Hickory Tree Chorus is one of 15 choruses in the greater New York region, one of 30 regions in Sweet Adelines International and 600 choruses worldwide.

Lilas Schmidt of Gillette, mother of the group's director, Carolyn Schmidt, at age 82 shared her history with the group.

"I have been with the group since 1971. I really enjoy being with both younger and older women. There is a great deal of satisfaction sharing music with the group. I used to sing in a quintet, competitively, with Dana's mother. Singing keeps me young."

Lilas Schmidt's granddaughter, director Carolyn's daughter, Lauren Kahn, is a student at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.

"Sweet Adelines has been the highlight of my life," she said. "I learned the love of it here while singing in the group with my grandmother and my mother. Now, I sing with the Sweet Adelines in a chorus called the Melodeers."

Initially, Dunlevy, whose mother sang with the group, didn't have an interest in singing with the chorus. Three years ago she was inspired to join the group and has taken advantage of leadership training provided by the Sweet Adelines by becoming publicity and marketing chair. More recently she has taken on the position of regional marketing chair.

"The level of talent is awesome," she said. "Sweet Adelines is considered an amateur-performing group because everyone is a volunteer, but they are truly professionals. Sweet Adelines also provides vocal training to its members."

Ase Hagerman of Sweden, director of the Alba Chorus, a chapter of the Sweet Adelines, was with the group recently for two days of coaching. She is an experienced coach who travels the world sharing her expertise with Sweet Adelines groups to achieve tonal harmony.

"Several years ago I was with this group coaching," she said. "I am very pleased and happy that this very talented group invited me back to coach them. I remember some of them by their faces from my last trip here.

"I am in the U.S.A. for four weeks and will travel across the country to California, with many stops along the way, then on to Vancouver and New Zealand."

Because it is a performance-oriented singing group, two members of the Hickory Tree Chorus, Jeannene Butler and Sara McHugh, are choreographers. They work with the group teaching the moves that make the performance professional.

Patty Danner of Parsippany, a music teacher at Mendham High School, has been with the group for two years.

"My mom used to sing with a barbershop group," she said. "I'm what they call a 'barbershop brat.' I love to sing. I am also the assistant director of the baritone section."

Mary Lou VanHandle of Succasunna gave a little insight into the performance aspect of the group.

"It's a little like being in show biz," she said. "I enjoy music and performing for people. It's also given me an opportunity to make some nice new friends."

Carolyn Schmidt of Gillette, master director for 14 years, has been singing with the Sweet Adelines for 20 years. Schmidt is also a Sweet Adelines-certified music arranger. This provides the group the benefit of a wide variety of music to perform, from Broadway tunes and chestnuts to old-time barbershop music.

The international membership of nearly 27,000 women, all singing in English, includes choruses in most of the 50 United States as well as in Australia, Canada, England, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Scotland, Sweden, Wales and the Netherlands. There are also prospective choruses in Denmark, Greece and the United Arab Emirates. The group encompasses more than 1,200 registered quartets and 600 choruses.

The Hickory Tree Chorus awards an annual $1,000 scholarship to a college-bound high school senior who intends to further her music studies.

It has won many awards within Sweet Adelines over the years. In 2007 it won a first place gold medal in the Greater New York Region, for the seventh time in its history, qualifying the chorus to travel to Honolulu on Nov. 5 to compete in the SAI International contest.

CHATHAM TWP. – The Hickory Tree Chorus, a champion chapter of Sweet Adelines International (SAI), is celebrating its 40th year as a chartered SAI chapter, and is displaying related information and memorabilia during June at the Library of the Chathams, 214 Main St.

The library display includes photos of the chorus “then” and “now,” as well as photos of its current quartets, including Escape, a three-time Regional Quartet Champion.

In 1968, under director and Florham Park resident Richard Florsheimer, 20 women in the area competed in the first Regional SAI contest and placed 11th out of 26 choruses that year.

Last year, the now-70-voice chorus was awarded first place for the seventh time in its history, and this November will compete with SAI choruses from around the world in Honolulu, Hawaii.

In addition to regional and international competition, the chorus performs an annual show and at community events, like this year’s Fishawack Festival in Chatham, coming up this Saturday, June 14.

Chatham Township Roots

The chorus took its name from its original rehearsal site, the Hickory Tree section of Chatham Township. Although its rehearsal location has changed frequently over the years, the chorus retained its name and has always attracted members from many communities and backgrounds. Members hail from more than 40 communities in New Jersey and New York, including two from Florham Park and four from the Chathams.

An annual scholarship is awarded to a high school 12th grader in the area who intends to further her music studies, and educational opportunities are provided for members through the chapter and SAI. The chorus performs popular tunes and ballads arranged in four-part a cappella harmony, many by Hickory Tree Chorus’ Master Director Carolyn Schmidt, a certified arranger.

CHATHAM TWP. – The Hickory Tree Chorus, a champion chapter of Sweet Adelines International (SAI), is celebrating its 40th year as a chartered SAI chapter, and is displaying related information and memorabilia during May at the Florham Park Public Library, 107 Ridgedale Ave., and in June at the Library of the Chathams, 214 Main St.

The library display includes photos of the chorus “then” and “now,” as well as photos of its current quartets, including Escape, a three-time Regional Quartet Champion.

In 1968, under director and Florham Park resident Richard Florsheimer, 20 women in the area competed in the first Regional SAI contest and placed 11th out of 26 choruses that year.

Last year, the now-70-voice chorus was awarded first place for the seventh time in its history, and this November will compete with SAI choruses from around the world in Honolulu, Hawaii.

In addition to regional and international competition, the chorus performs an annual show and at community events, like this year’s Fishawack Festival in Chatham, coming up Saturday, June 14.

Chatham Township Roots

The chorus took its name from its original rehearsal site, the Hickory Tree section of Chatham Township. Although its rehearsal location has changed frequently over the years, the chorus retained its name and has always attracted members from many communities and backgrounds. Members hail from more than 40 communities in New Jersey and New York, including two from Florham Park and four from the Chathams.

An annual scholarship is awarded to a high school 12th grader in the area who intends to further her music studies, and educational opportunities are provided for members through the chapter and SAI. The chorus performs popular tunes and ballads arranged in four-part a cappella harmony, many by Hickory Tree Chorus’ Master Director Carolyn Schmidt, a certified arranger.

Dapper Dans to Host Spring Show

The Sweet Adelines International 2007 Regional Champion Hickory Tree Chorus will guest star April 26 on the Dapper Dans of Harmony show “Guys With Dolls,” 7:30 pm at James Caldwell High School, West Caldwell.

The New Providence-based chorus is celebrating its fortieth year as a chapter of Sweet Adelines International (SAI). Its 65 members hail from over 40 New Jersey and Staten Island communities. They are preparing to compete in SAI’s international contest this November in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Dapper Dans of Harmony are the Montclair-based chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. While each chorus regularly produces its own an annual show, it is rare to have both a men’s and women’s barbershop chorus appear in the same show.

Sweet Adelines International and the Barbershop Harmony Society, with combined worldwide memberships totaling almost 60,000, are non-profit organizations dedicated to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony, through education and performances. Why do you live in Florham Park? My husband and I bought our first house on Elmwood Road because the price was right, and was close to NYC trains, where we both worked at the time. We moved within town to be closer to Holy Family School where our sons were students. We're still here because our dog likes the woods behind our house.

Best thing about Florham Park? Hands down, it's the Fourth of July!

The worst thing? The acres of asphalt that pass for a downtown.

Hickory Tree Chorus Members Competing in Five Quartets

Seventeen members of New Providence-based Hickory Tree Chorus will compete in the Sweet Adelines International (SAI) Greater New York Region quartet contest April 5 in Philadelphia, PA. Hickory Tree Chorus, the SAI 2007 regional chorus champion boasts of having its members in five of this year’s 23 competing quartets.

The five quartets include 3-time returning regional quartet champion Escape and the 2006 Novice quartet winner, True Blues who sat out last year’s contest due to a member’s illness. Moonstruck, who placed seventh last year will compete for the first time with two new members. 24-Karat has two members who hold dual chorus membership (with Princeton-based Jersey Harmony Chorus).

Hickory Tree Chorus Master Director, Carolyn Schmidt will compete as the baritone of Brocade alongside her mother, Lilas Schmidt who will compete as the quartet’s bass singer. This will be the 35th consecutive regional quartet contest in which Lilas has competed, a record for a Hickory Tree Chorus member.

Many chorus and quartet members were heard locally in February, delivering Singing Valentines to surprised sweethearts at their schools, homes, and workplaces.

Hickory Tree Chorus Offers $1000 Music Scholarship

Hickory Tree Chorus, a champion chapter of Sweet Adelines International, is accepting applications for its 2008, annual $1000 scholarship to a musically talented young woman interested in pursuing a career in music. Qualified high school senior girls with good academic records and exceptional talent in vocal music are encouraged to apply. Students should also have applied for acceptance into a music program at a college or university. Applicants must submit an audio-tape or CD of a short performance demonstrating their particular talent. Tapes may include accompaniment, as needed. Completed applications and audio-tapes or CDs must be received by April 14th, 2008.

High school guidance departments in more than 50 communities have information and applications. Applications may also be obtained by e-mailing info@hickorytreechorus.org, or printing directly from the chorus’s web site at hickorytreechorus.org.

Fanwood Singer’s Donation Proves Love is ‘In Style’

As a member of the Escape quartet, Susan Schuman of Fanwood was required to pull her shoulder-length hair off her neck for Sweet Adelines International (SAI) competions. She twisted it high on her crown and wrapped it in a hairpiece for a polished look. But on February 4, she shed her long locks, and thus her need for the hairpiece, so that a child without any hair can crown his or her head with a much-needed wig.

While caroling with Escape quartet in Westfield this past holiday season, Mrs. Schuman saw a “Locks of Love” flyer posted at Panera Bread by a local Girl Scout. She had already been thinking about cutting her hair and wondered if she could wait until the February event date.

“I thought this would be good for Girls Scouts, for me, for others, and then I thought, here is my son, Jonathan, working on his mitzvah project for his upcoming bar mitzvah, and I figured I could do this as a mitzvah, in his honor,” said Mrs. Schuman.

Locks of Love is a public, non-profit organization that provides high-quality hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under the age of 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Most children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure.

“I was crying as I read the brochure. I knew I had to donate the full 10 inches –the length needed to make the actual hair prosthetics. You can donate a shorter amount, six inches or more, but they sell those donations to raise money to make the hair prosthetics,” explained Mrs. Schuman.

The hair prosthetics provided are custom-made from donated ponytails and retail for between $3,500 and $6,000. They are different from synthetic hairpieces because they form a vacuum seal and do not require the use of tape or glue. Only the wearer of the prosthetic ma remove it, by breaking the vacuum seal at the temples, dismissing any insecurities about classmates pulling off a hairpiece or losing it during sports. Each prosthetic requires between six and 10 ponytails and each strand of hair is hand-injected into the silicone base.

“My hair is shorter than it has ever been, but it will grow back. The children I am helping, they don’t have that luxury. I only hope I can fix my hair as nicely as the stylist [whose services were donated by Guillotine in Westfield]. I’ve been a wash-and-go girl for so long! Heck, I only used hairspray during contest season!” laughed Mrs. Schuman, who will compete again with Escape quartet on Friday, April 4 in Philadelphia.

Escape is the current Champion Quartet of the Greater New York Region of SAI. Mrs. Schuman also competes with Hickory Tree Chorus, the current regional chorus champion, this year –without a hairpiece.

Hickory Tree Chorus Celebrates 40 Years of Harmony

Hickory Tree Chorus celebrates 40 years as a chartered Sweet Adelines International chapter later this year. In July of 1968, 20 women, under Director Richard Florsheimer, officially began rehearsing four-part acappella harmony in the Hickory Tree section of Chatham Township, from which the chorus took its name. They have performed and competed locally, and internationally, ever since.

As the 2007 Greater New York Region champion of Sweet Adelines International, the chorus is preparing to compete in international competition in Honolulu, Hawaii in November. It will be Hickory Tree Chorus’ seventh trip to the international stage. The more than 60 women from over 40 communities in northern New Jersey and New York are led by Director Carolyn Schmidt of Gillette. Her daughter sang with the chorus until leaving for college this past fall. Her mother, Lilas Schmidt, has performed with the chorus, and as part of a quartet, for almost 40 years.

The chorus offers educational opportunities for members and awards an annual scholarship to an area high school senior pursuing music in college. The chorus performs pop, jazz, show tunes, and American standards all arranged in four-part harmony, many by Carolyn Schmidt, a certified arranger. The chorus does more than just sing the music, they perform it. In addition to placing first overall in the region in 2007, the chorus was awarded the first, annual Renee Craig Showmanship award for their exciting choreography and performance.

“This chorus, and this organization, offer so many opportunities for a woman to challenge herself to grow, not only as a singer and performer, but as a person,” says Dolly Power, Membership Chairperson.

WOODBRIDGE - Mayor John E. McCormac, members of the Township Committee and the "We Feed Woodbridge" Committee, along with Paul Sansone of Sansone's Route 1 Auto Mall, opened the annual holiday food drive Monday.

Food can be dropped off at the annual Barron Arts Center Holiday Concert on Dec. 14 and at numerous municipal collection sites.

"The 2007 holiday food drive is an important part of this year's 'season of giving' and will benefit hundreds of families throughout the township put food on the table," said McCormac. "This year, we are hoping to collect more than 10,000 pounds of nonperishable food over the next 30 days -food that will be distributed by our local food pantries as they work to ensure that less fortunate township residents receive much needed food supplies to help get them through the holidays."

The various township-sponsored food drives held throughout the year --Cast A Can When You Cast Your Vote, the Summer Concert Series, the Valentine's Day "Have a Heart" campaign and the annual holiday "Season of Giving" drive -have netted more than 74,000 pounds of food so far this year.

"This year, we have a significant start toward our goal with the extraordinarily generous donatio of more than 75 cases of food courtesy of Paul Sansone and the staff of Sansone's Route 1 Auto Mall," McCormac said. "We are encouraging other Woodbridge businesses and companies to join the "Season of Giving" with donations to the We Feed Woodbridge Committee."

The annual Barron Arts Center Holiday Concert (free admission) has become the principal event for the food drive. This year, the concert -scheduled for Dec. 14 at 8 p.m. at St. Cecelia's Church, 45 Wilus Way, Iselin -will be presented by the Hickory Tree Chorus.

"Local Women's Quartet 'Escaping' To Calgary"

With a combined 12 children, four husbands, students, patients, clients, and PTA meetings - who wouldn't want to escape? Well four area women, performing as the Sweet Adelines quartet named Escape, will do just that when they fly on Oct. 8 to Calgary in Alberta, Canada for the 61st annual Sweet Adelines International Convention and Competition.

This will be the third consecutive year of international competition for Michelle Metallo (tenor), Susan Schuman (lead), and Georgette Chrystal (baritone) who are also members of the Sweet Adelines 2007 Greater New York Region (#15) chorus champion, Hickory Tree Chorus, of New Providence.

Janel McNally (bass), a member of Jersey Harmony Chorus, of Princeton, will be performing in her first international competition. She replaced Escape's previous bass just eight weeks before the quartet won the Region #15 quartet competition in April, qualifying them to compete against 51 other quartets on the international stage in Calgary.

Metallo and McNally are residents of Hillsborough. Metallo is a math professor at Raritan Valley College and McNally owns her own business, "Mrs. Fix-It LLC." Chrystal, of Scotch Plains, is a Registered Nurse in the Neuro-Intensive Care unit of a major hospital. Schuman, of Fanwood, is an Assistant Director of Hickory Tree Chorus and a member of the Sweet Adelines Director Certification Program.

"Sweet Adelines does an amazing job of educating and encouraging women to achieve and succeed," Schuman said. "There is no other business out there where competitors coach each other, teach, and share like Sweet Adelines."

In addition to competing, Escape performed last year for many organizations like the Women's Club of Morristown and the Sage Seniors in Berkeley Heights and even caroled in downtown Westfield during the holidays. They performed at the annual Hickory Tree Chorus show and will be guest performers at the Jersey Harmony Chorus show on Nov. 4.

The women performed a farewell show for Hickory Tree members during the chorus's Sept. 26 rehearsal at the Suburban Music Center, located at 570 Central Avenue in New Providence. They finished with a parody of "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year," expressing gratitude for the child-free rehearsals that the start of the school year would bring. And while the commitment is great, so is the personal satisfaction.

"Sweet Adelines has helped me grow as a singer and musical leader," Chrystal said. "I am blessed to be singing with such talented ladies, they make my 'escaping' worthwhile."

A local scholarship committee didn't have to search very far for its annual candidate. In fact, there were two deserving students within its own group.

Carianne Bennett of Millington and Lauren Kahn of Gillette were named recipients of the 2007 Hick ory Tree Chorus Music Scholarship.

The $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a musically talented young woman interested in pursuing a career in music. For the first time in its 20-year history the scholarship was awarded to two young women, both members of Hickory Tree Chorus.

"We were fortunate to have two very talented, very deserving candi dates within our own chorus this year," said Lynn Macbeth, Hickory Tree Chorus scholarship chair. Both young women are 2007 graduates of Watchung Hills Regional High School.

Carianne Bennett will major in vocal studies at Oberlin College Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio. Her extensive musical background includes participation in the New Jersey chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition, placing as high as second; participation in the Spoleto Arts Symposium in Italy, performing the role of Mother in "Hansel and Gretel" and acceptance to the All-State Opera Festival.

Lauren Kahn will major in physics and minor in music at Northwestern University in Chicago, Ill. She is a member of the National Honor Society, a Bloustein Distinguished Scholar and recognized by Watchung Hills Regional High School for Outstanding Achievement in calculus and in French. She has studied voice, piano, music theory and arranging, and has participated in the New Jersey Youth Chorus, Central New Jersey Region Chorus and the New Jersey All-State Chorus.

With Bennett, Kahn conducted independent research, in conjunc tion with her Advanced Placement Physics class, regarding the ties between physics and vocal pedagogy.

Both young women have competed and performed with Hickory Tree Chorus, a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, and with Capriccio, a registered Sweet Ade lines International quartet. With the chorus, they have been named Regional Champions, and with Capriccio they have participated in, and placed as high as third, in the Sweet Adelines International Education Symposium Quartet Competition.

Hickory Tree Chorus members from more than 40 communities rehearse weekly in New Providence. As the 2007 Greater New York Region Champions of Sweet Adelines International, they will compete in Honolulu, Hawaii, with choruses from around the world in November 2008. "Mother And Daughter Are Truly In Harmony All The Way To Hawaii"

Byram — Willadene Karns figures it's always nice to win, but it's even nicer to win when you win a trip to Honolulu.

Karns and her daughter, Sara McHugh, both teachers in the Byram school district, also sing with the Hickory Tree Chorus, the 2007 first place winner for the Greater New York Region of Sweet Adelines.

"For the last 25 years we've taken first, second or third place," Karns said. Had they taken first place last year the trip would have been to Las Vegas. Two years ago, it was to Indianapolis. Karns figures they picked the best year to win.

Karns and her three daughters all have certain things in common, the facial expressions, mannerisms and catch phrases typical of many mothers and daughters. While Karns was teaching her daughters the typical "mom lessons:" right from wrong, to be kind to others, to be ourselves and to work hard for our dreams, she was also providing one more lesson- a love of music.

Karns, of Stanhope, is a third grade teacher at Byram Lakes School and has been singing with Hickory Tree Chorus for more than 24 years. A friend in the chorus at the time asked her to join her at a rehearsal. Karns' husband told her, "I can babysit; you need to do something for yourself." At the time her daughters were 17, 14 and 11.

One of Sarah's sisters used to perform with Hickory Tree and the other is a trained opera singer.

McHugh, of Byram, teaches kindergarten. She joined the chorus in 1996, after college. "After I graduated I had no performance outlet," said McHugh.

Noting the Sweet Adeline/Barbershop Quartet stereotype, McHugh laughed: "We're not your white-haired biddies anymore. We don't just stand and sing." The Sweet Adelines groups now bring choreography into their performances.

Sweet Adelines International choruses perform barbershop-style four-part a cappella harmony. The groups range in size, with Hickory Tree's group at about 65 members. "We're the smallest of the large chorus groups. Our youngest member is 16 and our oldest is 80. We're from all different walks of life. What binds us together is our love of music," said Karns.

After the Hickory Tree Chorus won in Philadelphia, they had 18 months to raise money for the Hawaii trip.

"We raise money by selling candy, a cookbook we wrote as a group, and in the summer we sell refreshments for the Somerset Patriots ballpark. Our favorite way to earn money, of course, is to perform," said Karns. The group performs songs of all types, including the Beatles, Carol King, Disney tunes and Fats Waller to name a few. "We love to entertain small groups, the personal contact is wonderful," said McHugh.

Besides making the best music they can, the Hickory Tree Chorus has other goals. They are currently working with Curves to strengthen their bodies which helps build strength for improved vocal quality and breath support. Each year the group donates a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior going in to music.

To join the group all you need is a love of singing and to be able to hold your part. You don't even need to read music. "I learn most of my music in the car. The songs are given to us on tape as well as the sheet music," said McHugh.

The singers in Hickory Tree come from as far as New York City and Staten Island. There is no age requirement either. Their group has several family groups, two with three generations in the chorus- grandmother, mother and daughter. Practices are at the New Jersey Youth Symphony/Music Center in New Providence, New Jersey, near the Short Hills Mall. Practices are once a week, with a few extra before a performance at times. Besides the private performances, Hickory Tree has one concert a year open to the public. This year's concert will be November 17.

"Hickory Tree Chorus Announces Scholarship Winners"

MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ — Carianne Bennett of Millington and Lauren Kahn of Gillette were named recipients of the 2007 Hickory Tree Chorus Music Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a musically talented young woman interested in pursuing a career in music. For the first time in its 20 year history, the scholarship was awarded to two young women, both members of Hickory Tree Chorus.

"We were fortunate to have two very talented, very deserving candidates within our own chorus this year," said Hickory Tree Chorus scholarship chair, Lynn Macbeth. Both young women are 2007 graduates of Watchung Hills Regional High School.

Carianne Bennett will major in Vocal Studies at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio. Her extensive musical background includes participation in the New Jersey chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition, placing as high as second; participation in the Spoleto Arts Symposium in Italy, performing the role of Mother in Hansel and Gretel; and acceptance to the All-State Opera Festival.

Lauren Kahn will major is Physics and minor in Music at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. She is a member of the National Honor Society, a Bloustein Distinguished Scholar, and recognized by Watchung Hills Regional High School for Outstanding Achievement in Calculus and in French. She has studied voice, piano, music theory, and arranging, and has participated in the New Jersey Youth Chorus, Central New Jersey Regions Chorus, and the New Jersey All-State Chorus.

With Carianne Bennett, Lauren Kahn conducted independent research, in conjunction with her Advanced Placement Physics class, regarding the ties between physics and vocal pedagogy.

Both young women have competed and performed with Hickory Tree Chorus, a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, and with Capriccio, a registered Sweet Adelines International quartet. With the chorus, they have been named Regional Champions, and with Capriccio they have participated in, and placed as high as third at, the Sweet Adelines International Education Symposium Quartet Competition.

Hickory Tree Chorus members from over 40 communities attend weekly rehearsals in New Providence. As the 2007 Greater New York Region Champions of Sweet Adelines International, they will compete in Honolulu, Hawaii with choruses from around the world in November 2008. HICKORY TREE CHORUS SHOW TICKETS ON SALE

Hickory Tree Chorus, the 2007 Champions of the Greater New York Region of Sweet Adelines International, will present “Dance With Me” an exciting show of toe-tapping popular songs performed in four-part acappella harmony, and featuring guest men’s quartet, “Our Town.”

The chorus takes the stage for two lively performances on Saturday, November 17, at West Morris Mendham High School, 65 East Main Street, Mendham, NJ at 3pm and 7:30 pm. Advanced tickets are available by calling 973-539-7904 or by e-mailing tickets@hickorytreechorus.org. All seats are reserved and tickets are priced $20 for adults; $18 for seniors aged 62 and older; $10 for youths aged 12 and under. A 20% discount is available for Jersey Arts cardholders. All tickets cost an additional $2 at the door.

Guest quartet, Our Town, promises dynamic barbershop harmony from its international medalist members, including lead Scott Brannon, director emeritus of the Big Apple Chorus, from the Barbershop Harmony Society.

Hickory Tree Chorus has performed recently at community events like the Relay for Life in New Providence, but “Dance With Me” is their first big public show since winning first place this past April in regional competition held in Philadelphia. The win qualifies the chorus to compete in the Sweet Adelines’ international contest November 2008 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The chorus boasts some 65 voices on stage, with members coming from over 40 communities in the northern New Jersey and New York area.

Hickory Tree Chorus is a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, a worldwide organization of women singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performances. This non-profit, independent music education association is one of the world’s largest singing organizations for women.
